Today’s snorkels were at Mexico Rocks, Mexico Caves and Playa Blanca.  While the Goliath rocked in the growing Northern winds, the group headed to Mexico Rocks. There they found stingrays, nurse sharks, squid, and many forms of sponges and fish of all kinds. By the time the group arrived back at the Goliath, the Northern turned from threatening to washing the boat and its crew and passengers with a cooling tropical rain. Then it was off to Mexico cave to test the free diving skills of the students. The cave entrance, twenty or so feet beneath the surface, opens into a cave system that actually connects to the other side of the island. It was a good test of ear clearing and stamina as the students did their best to look into the horizontal throat of the cave. While snorkeling the cave entrance, the rain shower began for real. Getting back, the entire crew huddled inside the Goliath seeking a warm and dry spot to wait out the storm. It was a long wait. Even as a small intrepid group hit the water again at Playa Blanca, the majority of the group chose to stay back and enjoy Dr. Ken’s ship stories. As we made dock and prepared to scurry home to dinner, a beautiful double rainbow filled the late afternoon skies. Simply amazing!

After a filling dinner, the group once again braved the persistent rain  and used a seine to collect the aquatic life along the shallows. A great chance to see puffer fish and other denizens of the shallow shoreline waters. A long, wet but rewarding day!

Day three featured snorkeling at Pillar Coral and Tres Cocos (three coconuts – named after the three huge coconut trees that used to mark the spot from the shore. Used to being the operative word. Hurricane Richard took care of one of them and then…)
